Two flamingos.

Micron pen in sepia.  © 2011 Uban.
I think I may have failed here.  Flamingos DO actually exist....

I'm pretty sure the right side up one is playing hard-to-get.  The upside down flamingo is being a bit aggressive.

Three mermaids.

Micron Pen in sepia.  © 2011 Uban.
Clearly, these mermaids are having affairs with one another.  They look so guilty, don't you think?

Listening to Kate Nash's "Foundations."  It's a sweet video too.

Accordion Book: I will see you tomorrow, Sweetheart.

Accordion Book.  Sepia Micron Pen.  © 2011 Uban.

Recently, I've been thinking about using different formats for my drawings, so I decided to make an accordion book this time.

I...

...will see...

...you tomorrow,

Sweetheart.

I went to that viewing that I mentioned in an earlier post...  It was incredibly strange for me.  The last time I was at a viewing I was eleven years old.  As we were leaving because the funeral was in the morning, her husband bent over the casket and said this.  I think I broke into about a million and a half pieces right then.

Sometimes the end is really the end.

Sepia Micron Pen.  © 2011 Uban.
I wanted to pursue my creatures in greater detail since I've been thinking about texture lately.  So, here's a little drawing.

I've been thinking about the finality of consequences and circumstances lately...  I don't mean to be a downer!  Haha.  Honestly, I'm a fan of second and third and fourth chances, and lately I've just been thinking about having to live with some of the things that have happened without getting that do-over... ho-hum.

Love Letter to Paul Thek

Comforting Thek. © 2010 Uban.  Acrylic, paper, acetate, marker.  17x 35.5 inches.
Comforting Thek is my love letter to Paul that I made for my Intermediate Drawing class last semester.  It was inspired by the "Paul Thek: Diver, A Retrospective" Show at the Whitney.  October 21, 2010-January 9, 2011. (See the article in The Fader "NYC: Bring Your Girlfriend to See Paul Thek’s Rubber Flesh + Wild Bad Paintings" "at the Whitney by Naomi Zeichner.)

Up close.
The acetate layer is a drawing of silhouettes of students around the Bell Tower on campus.  I sat on a bench in front of Paley Library and drew as many people as I could walking past for an hour, and later made several transfers on to acetate and other media.

Flying Hands.

Pen on paper.

"Lovers of air travel find it exhilarating to hang poised between the illusion of immortality and the fact of death." --Alexander Chase, "Perspectives," 1966

I'm attending a viewing tonight.  This quote and picture together makes me think of other things.

I [really] miss you.

Pen and colored pencil.  GIMP.

I could be anybody.

Same drawings, new project!

Testing: animation of flying hands from Charlene Uban on Vimeo.

I've always had an interest in animation, so I thought maybe I could show my drawings in a different way. This video is just a test, and it's super short, but I thought I'd share the newness of what I'm working on.
